A master's thesis at College of Science at University of Basrah sought to discover ancient rivers in the Zubair area west of Basrah using remote sensing
The thesis of the student Muhammad Lazim Lafta aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the geological and cultural history of the study area in southwestern Iraq, by exploring and studying ancient rivers and geologically analyzing them using modern technologies such as remote sensing and satellites and understanding the ancient water sources in the region, and how they affected the natural and cultural development of the region over the ages and then providing accurate knowledge about these resources.
The study concluded the presence of ancient water channels that had disappeared in various study areas while browsing the enhanced satellite images, indicating the presence of ancient rivers that had been discovered.
The study recommended conducting comprehensive studies of each of the ancient rivers individually in Basrah Governorate, given that it contains many extinct rivers and the availability of abundant information that can be used.
