College of Veterinary Medicine at University of Basra organized a scientific workshop on artificial sweeteners and their effects on nutrition.
The workshop aimed to clarify the optimal use of these sweeteners in several areas of nutrition such as soft drinks, pastries, types of baked goods, ice cream and other products such as toothpastes and some medicines.
The workshop, which was lectured by Dr. Nazim Muhammad Jawad and lecturer Asaad Hassan Issa, included the doses of sweeteners allowed for use and their negative effects if used for long periods and in larger quantities, as well as explaining the possibility of using these sweeteners instead of regular sugar, especially for diabetics, as they are free of calories, in addition to their use by people who want to lose weight and follow a diet. Among the artificial types are saccharin, aspartame, sucrose, neotame and stevia.
