PhD Dissertation at University of Basrah Investigates Broccoli as an Anti-Cancer Agent
A PhD dissertation in College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, explored the purification and characterization of the enzyme myrosinase from broccoli and studied the anti-cancer effects of the compound sulforaphane on colon cell lines.
The dissertation, presented by student Iman Hadi Oudah, aimed to purify the therapeutic enzyme myrosinase from broccoli and study the optimal characteristics of the purified enzyme.
The dissertation involved the purification and identification of the active compound sulforaphane from broccoli using HPLC, comparing it with standard sulforaphane and available sulforaphane dietary supplements on the market, and investigating the inhibitory effect of sulforaphane on human colon cell lines over exposure periods of 24, 48, and 72 hours at varying concentrations using the MTT assay.
