University of Basrah Organizes Seminar on the Impact of Agricultural Media on Date Palm Growth
The Date Palm Research Center at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on the impact of environmental factors and planting methods on the growth of date palm seedlings (Phoenix dactylifera), specifically the Hallawi variety.
The seminar, led by lecturer Abdul-Samad Abboud Abdullah, aimed to highlight the importance of using soil amendments in agricultural media for their significant role in improving the physical and chemical properties of the agricultural environment.
The seminar introduced the material "zeolite" and its role in providing adequate moisture for plants. Due to its porous structure, zeolite reduces the impact of soil salinity stress because of its high cation exchange capacity.
The seminar showcased a series of field experiments conducted by the researcher using zeolite on Hallawi date palm seedlings in an orchard in the Abi Al-Khaseeb district. These experiments demonstrated significant results in shoot and root growth, as well as improved soil moisture levels.
