For environmental sustainability along the coasts, Basrah University organizes a course on methods for treating oil spills.
The Marine Science Center at Basrah University organized a course on methods for treating oil spills off the Iraqi coasts.
The course, presented by lecturer Mazen Abdul-Hussein Bedan, aimed to discuss a range of scientific solutions supported by laboratory experiment results, to address crude oil spills from ships docked at oil ports off the Iraqi coasts.
The course included an explanation of treatment methods in the aquatic environment, which involve removing oil spots by skimming oil off the water surface mechanically (skimmers), or using chemical methods which include spraying liquid oil dispersants to disperse spot clusters and spread them in columns over the water to reduce their damage. Alternatively, it involves using biological methods, which include using certain organisms, such as bacteria, to break down and decompose the spots into less harmful compounds.
