University of Basrah Organizes Seminar on Genetic Diseases
The College of Medicine at the University of Basrah held a seminar on genetic diseases in the community.
The seminar aims to raise awareness about the disadvantages of consanguineous marriages, as they increase the likelihood of inheriting pathological traits and the occurrence of rare genetic diseases in newborns, including chromosomal, embryonic diseases, and congenital abnormalities.
The seminar featured two lectures presented by Dr. Saad Abdullah and Dr. Alaa Abdul Razzaq. They explained thalassemia, its causes, symptoms, and treatment, as well as introduced the major genetic diseases prevalent in today's society. It was noted that there is an increase in the incidence of these diseases, especially in rural areas where the rate of consanguineous marriages is high.
