University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on a Taxonomic Perspective of Plant Virus Groups
The College of Agriculture at Basrah University organized a seminar discussing the importance of viruses belonging to the genus Potyvirus and their relationship with insect vectors.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Muhannad Abdul-Ridha Al-Waeli, aimed to highlight the significance of this genus of plant viruses and their global prevalence.
The seminar addressed the major viral groups within this genus that affect plants, particularly the Solanaceae family, including tomato crops, which can suffer losses up to 90%. This group of viruses is highly efficiently transmitted by the whitefly, an insect known for its widespread presence, especially in protected agriculture, and its rapid development of resistance to chemical pesticides.
