A Phd thesis at University of Basrah explores the production of a protein source
A Phd thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, investigated the production of a local protein concentrate by utilizing black soldier fly larvae and its use in poultry farming projects as an alternative to imported protein concentrate.
The thesis by researcher Tariq Ibraheem Majeed Hashim aims to produce a local concentrate protein manufactured by drying a certain stage of black soldier fly larvae, which were fed and raised on market and household waste.
The thesis included three scientific experiments to produce black soldier fly larvae powder in broiler chickens in the second experiment and laying hens in the third experiment.
The thesis concluded that there is an improvement in the productive, immune, physiological, and microbial traits of broiler chickens, as well as an increase in egg production and mass with an improvement in egg weight for laying hens fed diets containing larvae powder. Improvements in immune and microbial indicators were also observed.
