Within the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in finding solutions to address the water crisis and the openness of the university to serve the community.
Dr. Thamer Ahmed Hamdan, President of University of Basrah inaugurated a desalination plant in one of the areas of Basrah and donated by the UNDP and the local government in the province of Basrah, which was entrusted to the departments and supervision of University of Basrah.
Hamdan said that a series of meetings with the donor of the project completed the delivery of project management to University of Basrah because of the availability of scientific and specialized possibilities in the management of such projects.
hamdan said also that The project will provide drinking water free of the families close to the project, where a capacity of about 200 cubic meters per day, as well as the sale of part of the product to cover the cost of perpetuation of production and maintenance of the project and the provision of raw materials.
So Faculty of Engineering at the University of Basra produces the oldest desalination project in Basra, which still provides the students with the appropriate environment for their studies and scientific research in the field of water desalination, as well as providing safe drinking water for students of the Dormitories and university employees for free.
