University of Basrah discusses the biological treatment of polluted soil with hydrocarbons

The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar titled “Biological treatment of polluted soil with hydrocarbons”.

The researcher Intisar Muhsin Abod, illustrates that the study of the pollution of the environment in all its components is one of the most important topics that concern many scientists and to find the right ways to treat pollution with the least possible danger and cost.

Physical and chemical processes are sometimes insufficient to contain the pollutants and remove them from the environment. For that reason, the Environmental Biotechnology was found, and it is one of the most important vital biotechnologies.

It deals with biotechnology applications in environmental fields, which has many important achievements and applications in many fields, such as the production of active materials by using organisms such as bacteria and fungus (Bioremediation) to get rid of soil and water pollutants. As well as the use of the Green Biotechnology which is a vital biotechnology that specializes within the use of some plants types to remove pollutants from the air, water and soil with a process known as (phytoremediation).

The plants have certain qualities that make them capable of removing oil pollutants, for example, by absorbing these pollutants and conducting some processes or procedures to get rid of the pollutant.

These processes include (Phytostimulation, Phytostabilization, Phytovolatilization, Phytoextraction, and Phytotransformation) which are environmentally friendly and less costly from other processes.
