A research team at the Medical and Aromatic Plants Unit at the Faculty of Agriculture in the University of Basrah succeeded to grow crocus sativus plant
Since the last of May, and for the first time in the southern region, experimental works were conducted to grow this plant, which was successful.
Dr. Fatima Ali Hassan, Director of the Medical and Aromatic Plants Unit mentioned that the main objective of growing sativus is to find out if the climatic conditions are suitable in Basrah province to grow this plant, which is one of the most important medicinal and aromatic plants for containing the Crocin, Safranal, as well as Its uses within the food industry to add flavor, taste, and color. Expansion of Crocus Sativus growing areas is an important step because the areas of its growth were limited between Iran, Spain, and India. On the other hand, if the growing process was successful in the province, then it will produce huge profits for the reason that it is a plant with high financial returns.
