The Faculty of Science at the University of Basrah hosted Prof. Dr. Adel Yaqoub Al-Handal, Professor at the Swedish University of Gothenburg. The professor gave a specialized scientific lecture entitled (Neon Diatomic: a new field in nanotechnology).

The lecture showed that diatoms of single-cell algae are prevalent in all aquatic environments and play an important role in the food pyramid. The lecture explained that diatoms algae are distinguished from all other algae by the fact that their cell walls are pure silica. The wall contains so tiny microscopic openings that form neat geometric motifs that vary in shapes from one type to another. Because of this remarkable structure, the use of these microscopic openings has entered the tiny microscopic industries such as optical sensors systems, infrared radiation telescopes, power generation cells, and fiber optics. The lecture also pointed out that the formation of these microscopic openings allowed it to be used in medical fields as carriers of various drugs such as some antibiotics and Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug.
Finally, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the head of the Department of Environment Sciences presented a certificate of appreciation and in addition to the shield of Environment Sciences department to Dr. Adel Al-Handal as grateful for the valuable lecture he gave.
