College of Sciences was established in 1964 and it’s one of the colleges that were founded during that same year at Basrah city. The first graduate course was in 1968. During the establishment period of the college, it contained four scientific departments which are Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Mathematics. And it’s most significant scientific activities were proudly the founding of Marine sciences center, where it was performing as researching unit at the college within the year of 1977, also the founding of Polymers research center (the exclusive center in Iraq) in the year of 1966. The college also included Iraqi Polymers Organization. College of Sciences is considered to be the pioneer college to apply courses systems (or units systems) where there are three courses during the studying year (course No.1, course No.2, and summer course). The college of Sciences awards the following certificates: Bachelor degree certificate in seven specializations which are Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer sciences, Geology, and Environment sciences for the duration of four studying years, Also, the college is awarding Master degree certificate and Doctoral degree certificate within the specializations of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer sciences, and Geology for postgraduate students.
